In this lecture, my primary aim is to examine the role played by the political uses of the past-especially regarding the military dictatorship (1964-1985)-in the formation of the identity of this extremist political force. Alexandre de Sá Avelar is Professor at the Institute of History at the Federal University of Uberlândia (Brazil) and a Researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq, Brazil). He was a Visiting Researcher at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, Paris) between 2016 and 2017.
