🇬🇧 On May 13th, the first European Doctoral Day will take place - to mark the occasion, we are delighted to invite you to the events organised by members of the Jagiellonian University PhD Student Association! Here's what's in store for you (all events will be held in English): 💠 14:15-15:45: "Starting a PhD in Kraków: Stories of Beginnings" - hybrid event (in-person part in the JU Student Space) We meet international PhD students who chose Poland for their doctoral journey in a discussion panel. Our guests will share their personal stories and tell us what brought them here, how they adapted to life in Kraków, and what surprised or challenged them the most along the way. It's a chance to hear direct reflections on navigating a new academic and cultural environment, and the strategies they found to make it work. The meeting will be led by Artur Galicki, the TD UJ Proxy for International PhD Students. People interested in starting their PhD are also very welcome! 💠 16:00-19:30: "Science Meets Story: a Workshop in Collaborative Fiction Writing" - in-person event in the JU Student Space What if your dissertation fieldwork, your lab results, or your theoretical frameworks could be the seed of a novel? In this workshop, we explore exactly that! Drawing on the experience of a neuroscientist and a sociologist, we show how researchers can collaborate across disciplines to write fiction that is grounded in scientific knowledge and shaped by imagination and a good sense of literary genre. You will work in pairs to develop a shared story concept, using each co-writer's field of expertise as source material and inspiration. This will be an excellent opportunity to meet other doctoral students, build interdisciplinary connections, and perhaps even establish lasting artistic collaborations! The workshop will be led by Alice Ballabio from the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences and Kala Dobosz from the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences, and refreshments will be provided for those taking part. 💠 19:30-20:00: "A Happy PhD: Build Your Support Network" - in-person event in the JU Student Space (at the end of the workshop) A PhD doesn't have to be a lonely battle in the lab or in front of a screen. During the talk, we'll encourage you to build your informal support network that can help you survive (or even enjoy!) this demanding chapter of your life. We'll share practical experience with running online Pomodoro co-working sessions, strategies for keeping each other motivated, exchanging tacit knowledge to navigate this complex institution that academia is, and finding inspiration in your peers. We'll also point you toward resources worth bookmarking, like the Academic Imperfectionist podcast. You don't need to be perfect - you just need to make it to the finish line. Preferably with good company! Serdecznie zapraszamy też osoby, które dopiero chciałyby rozpocząć swój doktorat! 💠 16:00-19:30: „Na styku nauki i literatury: warsztaty wspólnego pisania opowiadań" - wydarzenie stacjonarne w Strefie Studenckiej UJ A gdyby tak badania terenowe przeprowadzone w ramach pracy doktorskiej, wyniki laboratoryjne czy przeglądy teoretyczne stały się zalążkiem powieści? Podczas tych warsztatów właśnie tym się zajmiemy! Czerpiąc z doświadczeń neurobiolożki i socjolożki pokażemy, w jaki sposób naukowcy z różnych dziedzin mogą współpracować, aby tworzyć beletrystykę opartą na wiedzy naukowej, a jednocześnie kształtowaną przez wyobraźnię i wyczucie gatunku literackiego. Będziecie pracować w parach nad stworzeniem wspólnej koncepcji opowieści, wykorzystując dziedzinę wiedzy każdego ze współautorów jako materiał źródłowy i inspirację. Będzie to doskonała okazja do poznania innych osób doktoranckich, nawiązania kontaktów międzydyscyplinarnych, a może nawet rozpoczęcia trwałej współpracy artystycznej! Warsztaty przeprowadzą Alice Ballabio ze Szkoły Doktorskiej Nauk Ścisłych i Przyrodniczych oraz Kala Dobosz ze Szkoły Doktorskiej Nauk Społecznych, a dla osób uczestniczących przewidziany jest poczęstunek. 💠 19:30-20:00: „Szczęśliwy doktorant: zbuduj swoją sieć wsparcia" - wydarzenie stacjonarne w Strefie Studenckiej UJ (na zakończenie warsztatów) Studia doktoranckie nie muszą być samotną walką w laboratorium czy przed ekranem komputera. Podczas wykładu, zachęcimy Was do stworzenia wzajemnej sieci wsparcia, która pomoże Wam przetrwać (a może nawet czerpać radość!) z tego wymagającego etapu życia. Podzielimy się praktycznymi doświadczeniami z prowadzenia internetowych sesji coworkingowych metodą Pomodoro, strategiami wzajemnego motywowania się, wymianą wiedzy ukrytej, która pomoże poruszać się po zawiłościach akademickiej codzienności, oraz czerpaniem inspiracji od innych osób doktoranckich.
