Shortly before that, his nemesis Hans Memling had received a commission from a Florentine merchant for a painting with the significant title: The Last Judgement. Weakened by sickness, Hugo van der Goes saw Memling's painting and... experienced the end of the world. The question of who gets to be saved and who will be consumed by the hellish depths at the moment of the ultimate trial keeps the inhabitants of the fifteenth century Europe awake at night, as is also evident in Memling's work. Agata Duda Gracz's stage adaptation centred on the creation of Gdańsk's most famous painting transports us into the Middle Ages and raises questions about the power of art, the artist's condition and the human fears we have been trying try to cope with for centuries through art, religion, and... war.
